About Lucy

As a baby boomer, Lucy’s parents married after her Dad came home from serving in England with the RCAF (Royal Canadian Air Force) as a radar specialist during WWII. They had three daughters with Lucy as the middle child. Growing up in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Lucy enjoyed the opportunities her parents could afford. Her Dad worked for the telephone company.

As an avid lover of sports, Lucy played every sport offered at school, and was the Provincial High Jump Champ. Lucy was awarded “Female Athlete of the Year” at Dartmouth High, In addition to graduating the second highest in her class of 700+ students and receiving University scholarships.

“Growing up in a Christian home, faith in God and my personal relationship with Jesus who is my Lord and Savior and my best friend, was and is an important part of my life. I went to Explorers and C.G.I.T. – Canadian Girls In Training and the summer between High School and University I was fortunate to be able to attend CGIT Camp Council. I headed off to University with a renewed commitment to live my life for Christ.”

While attending UNB (University of New Brunswick) in Fredericton, Lucy played Varsity Field Hockey and JV Basketball for each of the three years of her undergrad degree. Graduating with Honors, she received her BPEd (Bachelor of Physical Education) with a minor in Mathematics in 1970.

Following graduation, Lucy’s first teaching position was at Centre Consolidated School in Lunenburg County, Nova Scotia, teaching Math and PE. She went to summer school and completed a second degree by 1974, receiving a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics. Lucy taught and coached sports teams for seven years in Lunenburg Co. Nova Scotia.

During the last two years at Centre, her sister Ruth had moved to Lethbridge, AB to attend school. Ruth would call, reverse the charges, and they would talk for hours. Having decided it was cheaper to move west, Lucy resigned from her position, packed up her car and drove over 3000 miles to live with Ruth.

After a few temporary positions, Lucy managed to do some substitute teaching and had a position teaching in a one room school on a Hutterite Colony. Nine grades, with the younger ones attending and not knowing English!

Eventually a full-time position was offered and that is where Lucy stayed for the next four years before getting a 3/4 split class at another Lethbridge County school. Lucy taught in two other schools in the County of Lethbridge and took early retirement in 2002.

Meanwhile Ruth (Lucy’s sister), had moved on and joined the Department of Foreign Affairs of Canada. With Ruth having numerous two to three year term assignments all over the world, this provided Lucy with the opportunity to travel and spend a summer with Ruth at each new posting.

After retiring from teaching in Canada, Lucy accepted a position with an International School in Kuwait. Teaching High School Math at UAS – Universal American School in Kuwait for seven years. Lucy was in Kuwait during the Invasion of Iraq and returned to Canada in 2009. Her reason for returning home was to help look after her Dad. Mom had died in 2002 and Dad was needing more home care. Lucy’s father lived to be 94 and was able to stay in his own home until the last week of his life. He passed away in 2012.

“Throughout my teaching career, I loved to travel and used school breaks to visit places all over the world.  I am also passionate about Ringing Handbells and have enjoyed joining other English Handbell Ringers at International Symposiums and Festivals”.

Welcome to Lethbridge, Alberta Canada

“So often people are working hard at the wrong thing. Working on the right thing is probably more important than working hard.”
