Giving Thanks for Questions

Giving Thanks for Questions - Day 13 - Daily Content Challenge

I love it when students ask questions.

I tutor some adults in Math through the Read On - Adult Literacy program and I begin my sessions each time with a Land Acknowledgement.
We are on the traditional territory of the Blackfoot People. We honor, support and respect their cultural ways and language. Lethbridge is also home to the Metis of Alberta, Region III
One of my students whose first language is Spanish, asked why I share the picture I have on my screen. I tried to explain to this new Canadian how the discovery of the lives of the children lost at the Residential Schools has opened the eyes of many of us to the stories of the First Nations people and how they were treated by the European Settlers and the Canadian Government.
The picture I put up on my screen is one I took of the sign by the Galt Museum in Lethbridge. OKI means Welcome in the Blackfoot language.
I explained to my student that the city of Lethbridge does sit on the traditional territory of the Blackfoot Nation and we need to respect their cultural ways and language.
I am not sure she completely understood all that was said but at least it caused all the members of the class to think about this topic. I saw others nodding their heads.
My math class has been happening on zoom during the pandemic and being able to see each other on the screen makes it easy for the ‘teacher’ to see who is paying attention!
I know I posted this picture before but I wanted to show it again. I am thankful for the questions students ask, I am thankful that I live in this beautiful city and I am thankful that many of my students are members of the Blackfoot Nation and the Metis.
