Elephants in Sri Lanka

What’s on your fridge? - Day 40 - Daily Content Challenge

Today I would like to shift my focus and share some more of the things I see each day as I prepare my morning smoothie. I have been sharing a story about one of the mugs I used each day. Now I would like to share some of the other things that I have collected on my travels around the world. I thought I would take pictures of my collection of fridge magnets and share stories about them.

Today we are going to talk about elephants and in particular, elephants in Sri Lanka. When I had a visit to Sri Lanka, my travelling companion and I had the opportunity to visit an elephant orphanage while on route from Kandy back to Colombo.
Elephants are considered endangered in Sri Lanka. They are extremely vulnerable to habitat loss and decline. In the 19th century, Sri Lanka is believed to have been home to up to 14,000 elephants. In 2011, the first elephant census taken in Sri Lanka, found the number of elephants to be about 6,000.
Today, the Sri Lanka elephant is protected under the Sri Lankan law and killing one carries the death penalty.

My picture today shows magnets on my fridge that remind me of my trip to Sri Lanka and our visit to the Elephant Orphanage. I tell more of my trip to Sri Lanka in my Travelling Tuesdays book.
