Butterflies of Costa Rica

What’s on your fridge? - Day 41 - Daily Content Challenge

The fridge magnet I want to highlight today is one I bought in Costa Rica. This butterfly image is glued to a clothespin so one can attach a notice and post it to your fridge.

Butterflies are one of the most colorful creatures of Costa Rica. The most famous butterfly in Costa Rica is the Blue Morpho with its bright neon-blue wings and a wingspan of up to 15 cm.

There are butterflies everywhere in Costa Rica. There are 1500 different types of butterflies fluttering around here and 12 000 different species of moths. The numbers are staggering.

What are some differences between Butterflies and Moths?

Butterflies tend to be more colorful and have a larger variety of patterns while moths tend to be a little duller with more yellows and browns in their color schemes. Butterflies land with their wings closed and moths land with their wings open. Butterflies come out during the day while moths are nocturnal.

Butterflies play an important ecological role as pollinators. While they feed on nectar from flowers, they cross-pollinate by delivering pollen to other colorful blossoms. They are also a food source for predators.

If you are planning a trip to Costa Rica be sure and take the opportunity to look for these most beautiful creatures. I did!
