The Acropolis of Athens

The Acropolis of Athens - Day 51 - Daily Content Challenge

Today’s magnet reminds me of my trips to Athens, Greece.

Athens has the best-known acropolis. The acropolis of Athens is an ancient citadel built during the second half of the 5th C BC.  It is located on a rocky outcrop above the city of Athens and contains the remains of several ancient buildings.

The Acropolis was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.

The Acropolis was built as a home of Athena, the patron goddess of Athens. Some people wonder if the Parthenon and the Acropolis are the same thing. The Acropolis is the hill and the Parthenon is the ancient structure (an old temple) that sits on the top of the hill.

The Agora, located beneath the northwest slope of the Acropolis, was an important meeting place. People gathered to discuss events of the day, religion, philosophy, politics and legal matters. In modern Greek the term agora means marketplace. Today the Agora of Athens is an archaeological site.

Over hundreds of years, the Acropolis has been many things: a home to kings, a citadel, a mythical home of the gods, a religious center and a tourist attraction.

Definitely a must see if one has the opportunity to travel to Athens.
