Wien or Vienna, Austria
Vienna, Austria - Day 113 - Daily Content Challenge
Today’s bell displays the word Wien.
Wien is the German language name for Vienna. It is pronounced ‘Veen' (with a V). Founded in 500 BC, Vienna was originally a Celtic settlement. The name ‘Wien’ is derived from the Celtic ‘Vedunia’ which means ‘river in the woods. In 15 BC, Vienna became a Roman frontier city ‘Vindobona’. Its purpose was to guard the Roman Empire against the Germanic tribes to the north.
Vienna is the capital city of Austria. It is located on the Danube River. Vienna is known as the City of Music. This is due to its musical legacy. Many famous classical musicians such as Beethoven and Mozart called Vienna home.
On my bell you can catch a glimpse of one the city’s most recognizable symbols, St.Stephen's Cathedral. This church with its multi-coloured tile roof, can be seen today in the Stephansplatz not too far from behind the Opera House.
I have been to Vienna a couple of times. The most recent, I was with my sister, Harriet. St. Stephen’s Cathedral was one of the many interesting places we saw as we explored the sights in Vienna. Read more about my adventures in Austria in my Travelling Tuesdays book.
Have you been to Vienna or should I say, warst du in Wien?
