Camel Road Sign
Camel Road Sign - Day 167 - Daily Content Challenge
Where in the world would you see a road sign with a picture of a camel? Well, I have seen them in Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and the UAE (United Arab Emirates). But they are also common in other places of the world too. Kuwait has this sign too but it refers to all animals, not just a camel.
Camel crossing is part of the Animals Crossing, Road Signs groups. The camel crossing sign may warn of wild animals that may stray onto the road. In some parts of the world it may warn of a caravan of camels that a camel herder or breeder may lead as they cross a road near their land.
Just last year a traffic signal was installed in the middle of the desert so camels could cross the road at a popular tourist area in Northwest China! The news article in the South China Morning Post, April 16, 2021 says “Camels get traffic light to help tourists who are hoofing it through Chinese tourist destination.”
Camel-riding tours are a big attraction for visitors to the Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Spring in Dunhuang City, Northwest China. The walking boardwalks were often intersecting with camel paths creating traffic chaos. The new traffic signal turns green to let the camels cross and red to make them stop, making it safe from camel collisions.
I haven’t seen a crosswalk signal like the one in China but it sure would be interesting to be on a camel ride and watch the light turn green.
I remember seeing the sign near Abu Dhabi in the UAE and at one spot there were actually some camels quite close to that spot along the road through the desert. 🐪🐪🐪
Better slow down. Give them the right of way. Where is my camera?
