What is Entropy?
Kekich Credo Statements - What is Entropy? - Day 205 - Daily Content Challenge
Kekich Credo #17 - Life operates in reverse action to entropy. Therefore the universe is hostile to life. Progress is a continued effort to swim against the stream.
Oh dear. Understanding this statement is a challenge for me. I researched the meaning of entropy. Yikes, it has to do with chemistry. I took chemistry in high school but that was over 55 years ago. The chemistry I studied back then never used the word entropy or if it did, I don’t remember what it means.
So what is entropy? One definition I found says that entropy is the measurement of the increase in the disorganization within a system. Entropy is a measure of the number of different ways that a set of objects can be arranged. Entropy is a gradual decline into disorder. Entropy is a measure of disorder and affects all aspects of our daily lives. Left unchecked disorder increases over time.
Entropy measures the amount of thermal energy or heat required to raise the temperature. Some entropy examples in your kitchen include ice melting, salt or sugar dissolving, popcorn making, and boiling water. A campfire is another example of entropy. The solid wood burns and becomes ash, smoke and gases. All these spread energy outwards more easily than the solid fuel.
The actual entropy of the universe is a measure of the free energy left in the universe to drive all processes. There is evidence that the universe tends toward the highest entropy in many areas of our lives. High entropy means high disorder and low energy.
The Credo statement says we are constantly fighting against this entropy. If we are to make any progress we have to continue to go against the stream. Progress is a continued effort to swim against the stream. To swim against the stream means to go against the prevailing opinion or thought. Rather than go along with the flow, step out of your comfort zone and go against the stream and you will make progress.
Hmm… not sure I have made any progress in understanding this 17th Kekich Credo. But being persistent and not giving up because something is hard is something we all need to do. As Entrepreneurs we strive to do hard things well.
