Kekich Credo #54 - Don’t enter into a business relationship with anyone unknown to you without being furnished with references dating back at least 10 years. If he doesn’t have good enduring relationships, stay away. Check all representations on which you will rely, made by everyone.
Checking references enables you to ensure that you are entering into a business relationship with someone who is the most qualified person. By conducting reference checks you can avoid costs associated with failed probation periods which can impact your clients and damage your reputation. Since past performance is often a good indicator of future performance, references can help you determine if the person being considered is suited for the position.
When conducting a reference check, identify yourself and tell them you are calling about a reference for a candidate you are considering. Ask if this is a good time to talk or if they would rather schedule a call at a later time. Tell them that you have the consent from the applicant and that all responses will remain confidential. Â
It is important to give a brief description of the position you are considering to offer to the applicant so they can comment in context. Be sure and give them time to answer your questions. Let them respond. Do not cut them off or put words in their mouth.Â
The reference check is a common stage, late in the process. It is one of the many background checks you will want to conduct before confirming a business relationship with someone. A reference check is merely a way to confirm that a person is the right fit for your team. You want to verify that this person has the skills, experience, education and work history that you are looking for in this business relationship.Â
While a reference check can’t guarantee success, it can still be a helpful tool in determining if the candidate is the right person for the position. It can help you avoid making the wrong decision. This credo statement says you should check references that have had at least a 10 year history with the person you are considering. If the candidate does not have a good enduring relationship with his references then maybe it is best to walk away and look for someone else. Â
Do you have good references? Can you find people who will vouch for you?
