Life’s Purpose #11 - Empowering Others
“My life purpose is to help others see their own power and strength. I want to make each person I encounter feel better about themselves and have an added sense of self-efficacy and self-confidence.”
What does it mean to empower others? To empower means to give someone a sense of confidence or self-esteem. You give someone power or authority.
Empowering others is a critical skill of sound leadership. When you empower another person you impact that person, yourself, and also the world. The outcome of any task is always improved by the confidence your team members gain when they are empowered. You can empower others by building trust, through words of encouragement, or even by giving constructive feedback.
Empowerment means people have power and control over their own lives. People get the kind of support they need and what is right for them. People are equal citizens and they are respected and confident in their communities.
By making it a point to highlight a friend’s positive traits, you can help remind them of their worth. This builds belief in one’s own capabilities. Self-efficacy refers to an individual’s belief in his or her capacity to execute behaviours necessary to produce specific goals. Self-efficacy reflects confidence in the ability to exert control over one’s own behaviour, motivation and social environment. As your self-efficacy increases so does your belief in your power to change and reach your goals. Self-efficacy is about having the strong, positive belief that you have the capacity and the skills to achieve your goals.
Self-confidence means you accept and trust yourself. You know your strengths and weaknesses and have a positive view of yourself. Confidence helps you feel ready for life’s experiences. When you are confident you are more likely to move forward with people and opportunities rather than to back away from them. Confidence helps you to try again, if things don’t work out at first. When confidence is low, the opposite happens.
This Life’s Purpose statement says empowering others happens one person at a time. The message says I want to make each person I encounter feel better about themselves. Who did you encounter today? Did you make each person feel better about themselves? As you empower others, you also feel better about yourself.
