Life’s Purpose #17 - Helping the Less Fortunate

“I will help someone who is hurting or going without. I will give my assistance in some way to help someone else gain what they are missing, to help them have a better quality of life.”

It is a joy when we help people.  Helping people gives us a sense that we are doing something good for others.  Volunteering your time, money, or energy to help others makes the world better and it also makes you better.

Studies indicate that the act of giving back to your community boosts your happiness, health, and sense of well-being. Helping others is actually good for you.  Paying it forward is and giving back is how you create a circle of positivity.  Some people are willing to work hard and just need a helping hand.  Working with others makes it easier to achieve a common goal together.

Take time to help others grow.  Listen to what they are looking to do and offer them the time or resources to develop along their own path.  Share what you know and develop others. Anyone can give.  If whatever is given, makes a positive impact and difference on the life of the recipient, it qualifies as a charitable gift.  It must be given unconditionally without any expectation of a reciprocal action from the receiver.

You can help others in need even if you have no money.  You can donate old clothes and shoes.  You can be a patient listener. You could donate blood if you are able.  Spread positivity.  Compliment someone to increase their self-worth.  Volunteer at a local homeless shelter or soup kitchen.  Congratulate someone when they do something courageous.

When the act of giving or helping others is joyful and comes from the heart, then the energy behind giving increases many times over.  But if we give grudgingly, there is no energy behind that giving.  Cheerful giving allows you to pass along opportunities to those needing guidance, support and a chance to regain their independence, health, and happiness.

Helping and working with others can also give you a sense of purpose and feelings of self-worth.  Research into the brain has shown that helping others activates an area of the brain linked with contentment and reward.
