Amazing Sunsets

Sunset is simply the point that the sun disappears over the horizon.  The essence of a beautiful sunset is in the cloud layer.  The clouds at the upper and lower levels reflect the brilliant colours in the setting sun. The clouds take on the red and orange hues.  Blue is scattered more than the other colours because it travels as shorter, smaller waves.  At sunset, light has further to travel through the atmosphere so we see the longer wavelength of yellow and red light.

Twilight is the period of time before sunrise and after sunset.  The atmosphere is partially illuminated by the sun and it is neither totally dark or completely lit.  Last evening, I noticed the sky was not yet dark about 30 minutes after the time indicated for sunset and this morning when my alarm went off it was still dark and then the sky lightened for a time before the sunrise.  It takes anywhere from 70 - 100 minutes for it to get dark after sunset.  It takes longer for true darkness to arrive after sundown, the further north you are.

Astronomers recognize three different stages of twilight that happen twice in a 24-hour period between day and night and then repeat in reverse order between night and day.  The three stages are called civil twilight, nautical twilight and astronomical twilight.

Watching the sunrise or the sunset makes you happy.  It gives you a better sense of gratitude for the earth.  When you are caught up in the natural beauty of the Earth, you feel a sense of gratitude for what is happening in front of you. It is hard to describe a sunset. When you focus on the sunset, notice how the colours and light change as the sunset builds and then fades. The colour and pattern of a sunset is unique and different every time.
