Be Curious and Jump for Joy!

Be Curious and Jump for Joy! - Day 349 - Daily Content Challenge

Dolphins are marine mammals and unlike fish they breathe air using lungs so they must make frequent trips to the surface of the water to breathe.  Like every mammal, dolphins are warm blooded.

A group of dolphins is called a pod. Male dolphins are called bulls, females are called cows and baby bottlenose dolphins are called calves. A dolphin pregnancy can last between nine and sixteen months.

Because dolphins need to come up for air and keep an eye out for potential predators, dolphins can’t curl up and sleep at night like land mammals can. When sleeping, dolphins often rest motionless at the surface of the water or they may swim very slowly and steadily close to the surface.  In shallow water, dolphins may sleep on the seabed rising regularly to the surface to breathe.

Dolphins are usually gentle but they can get angry and make a loud, clapping noise with their jaws or slap the water hard with their tails. Wild dolphins will bite when they are angry or afraid.

There are currently 42 species of dolphins and 7 species of porpoises.  The orca or killer whale is the largest dolphin. All dolphins have conical-shaped teeth and they eat fish, squid and crustaceans.

Dolphins have very large brains.  They also exhibit sophisticated ways to communicate. Dolphins make vocal signals.  The sounds are forms of whistles, chirps and screams.

Dolphins are usually gentle but they can get angry and make a loud, clapping noise with their jaws or slap the water hard with their tails.  Dolphins slap their tails against the surface of the water to cause a shockwave which will stun fish. This is called kerplunking which is similar to the sound it makes.  Wild dolphins will bite when they are angry or afraid.

Don’t touch or pet dolphins, even if they come close enough to touch.  Instead use binoculars to watch dolphins from a safe distance. If a dolphin approaches you in the water, take immediate steps to move away.

To satisfy their curiosity, dolphins may swim alongside boats. The wake created by a boat causes a strong disturbance on the water’s surface.  Dolphins will leap out of the water to investigate.  It appears the dolphins are playing, but they are actually curious about why the surface of the water is disturbed.
