Spawn New Ideas and Don’t Give Up!

Salmon is the common name for several species of ray-finned fish in the family Salamoidae. Salmon are anadromous fish.  This means that they hatch in freshwater and then live the majority of their lives in the saltwater ocean and then they migrate back to the freshwater to spawn. Folklore says that the fish return to the exact spot where they hatched to spawn.  Some populations of several species are restricted to fresh water throughout their lives.

Salmon are native to the tributaries of the North Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.  Many species of salmon have been introduced into the Great Lakes of North America and Patagonia in South America.  Salmon are farmed in many parts of the world.  Norway is the world’s largest producer of salmon with Chile coming in second.

Saltwater salmon and freshwater salmon are the same species.  In North America these include Atlantic salmon which is just one species and five Pacific salmon species.  These are coho, chinook, pink, sockeye, and chum. 

Salmon are named after their runs.  Sockeye salmon swim upstream in the annual migration in the Adams River, British Columbia, Canada.  Many believe the word salmon comes from the Latin word salmo or salire which means to leap.  

Salmon flesh is red because of their diet.  The food they eat in the ocean is high in carotenoids which is the same pigment that gives carrots colour.  These pigments are stored in their flesh. 

Salmon is one of the most nutritious foods. Salmon is a rich source of protein, vitamin B, omega-3 fatty acids, selenium and potassium.  It is tasty, versatile, and widely available.

Here are my comments for each of these sayings.  

• Spawn new ideas - To spawn means to generate.  Come up with new ideas.

• Show your true colours - Be yourself.  Don’t try to imitate others.

• Swim against the current - Go against the norm and try new things. 

• Be a good catch - Be your best and others will want to follow you. 

• Cherish clean water - Take care of the environment

• Always find your way home - Always know your home is ready to welcome you.

• Don’t give up without a fight! - Give it all you got.  Never give up until you have tried everything.
