Think Globally and Keep a Positive Atmosphere
Think Globally and Keep a Positive Atmosphere - Day 357 - Daily Content Challenge
Earth is the third planet from the Sun and the only heavenly body in the universe known to harbour life. Only Earth sustains liquid surface water. About 71% of the Earth’s surface is made up of the ocean, polar ice, lakes, and rivers. The remaining 29% of the Earth’s surface is land, made up of continents and islands. Â
The Earth is about eight light minutes away from the Sun. It takes a year (about 365.25 days) to orbit the Sun. The Earth rotates around its own axis in slightly less than a day. About 23 hours and 56 minutes. The Earth’s axis is titled producing seasons.
The Earth is not flat, but it is not perfectly round either. The planet bulges around the equator as a result of the fact that it rotates about its axis. The diameter of the Earth from the North to the South Pole is 12,714 km (7,900 miles). Through the equator, the diameter is 12,726 km (7,926 miles). The difference is about 1/300th the diameter of Earth. The difference is too tiny to be seen in pictures of the Earth from space. The planet appears round to the human eye.Â
The Earth’s atmosphere consists mostly of nitrogen and oxygen. Greenhouse gases in the atmosphere trap a part of the energy from the Sun close to the surface. Water vapour in the atmosphere forms clouds that cover most of the planet. Tropical regions receive more solar energy than polar regions. This energy is redistributed by atmospheric and ocean circulation. Â
Human beings depend on the Earth’s biosphere and natural resources for their survival. Today, humanity’s impact on the Earth’s climate, its soils, its waters, and its ecosystems is unsustainable. This is threatening people’s lives and causing widespread extinction of other life.
