Canada, My Home and Native Land!
Canada - Day 48 - Daily Content Challenge
Ca-na-da! As I was starting to write this post today I started singing the Centennial Song by Bobby Grimby that we learned and sang in my high school graduation year. I found it on YouTube and also found the lyrics to this song as well. Do you remember singing that song?
This magnet shows the Canadian maple leaf and three animals that we identify with Canada. The beaver represents the fur trade and it is on the back of the Canadian nickel - our 5 cent coin. You can see the moose appearing between the letters A and D and on the left side there is a polar bear.
Beavers are native to Canada but they were once endangered due to over-hunting for their thick fur. In Canada, they are found in rivers, creeks, and lakes.
Beavers are not dangerous if left alone. A beaver will attack a human if trapped or cornered. Their sharp teeth may cause serious injury as well as infection.
Beavers are ‘ecosystem engineers’ with the ability to construct dams and create ponds. They can actually help us manage water-related issues such as drought, flooding, and water pollution.
Moose are the largest living member of the deer family. There are four subspecies found in Canada. The Alaska/Yukon moose, the shiras moose, western Canada moose and the eastern Canada moose. They live in every province and territory in Canada except Prince Edward Island. The moose is featured on the provincial coat of arms of Ontario.
Moose are often found in areas where logging or a recent forest fire has occurred. They prefer the new vegetation found in these places.
Polar bears live in the Arctic. They rely on sea ice to access the seals that are their primary source of food. They need the ice for a place to rest as well as to breed. Climate change and global warming has had a huge impact on the polar bear population. Polar bear fur appears white because it reflects the light from the snow and ice. Beneath all that thick and translucent fur, their skin is jet black.
Did you learn anything new from my post today? I hope so.
