A Lead Crystal Bell

A Lead Crystal Bell - Day 89 - Daily Content Challenge

I want to share about a bell that sits on one of my curio shelves.

There is a label on it that says 25% lead crystal Made in Japan.

So, I did some research. What is lead crystal? What is the difference between glass and crystal? Is lead dangerous? What companies in Japan make crystal glassware?

Is crystal the same as glass?

Actually glass is a generic name and crystal is a subcategory of glass. Both glass and crystal are made in the same way but with different materials. The word crystal is often used to refer to glassware that is more elegant than everyday glassware. Crystal is able to refract light while glass typically lacks the ability to do that. Crystal is used for formal table settings and is more expensive than glass.

What is lead crystal and why is it so heavy?

Lead crystal is heavier than traditional glass, because it contains lead oxide. The addition of the lead oxide increases the reflective index and makes the glassware sparkle more. Because of its lead content, crystal glassware is stronger and smoother than standard glass. In cut glass the presence of lead oxide also makes the glass softer and easier to cut.

In the EU [European Union] labeling of crystal products is regulated. Only glass products containing at least 24% of lead oxide may be called lead crystal. I guess since the label says 25% lead, my bell is considered lead crystal. Crystal can consist of up to 35% lead oxide. At this level it has the most sparkle.

The label also says it is made in Japan. I researched companies that produce lead crystal and found two in Japan. One company is called Hoya which started in 1945 and closed in 2009. The other company is Mikasa and it started in the 1970’s. It was sold by Arc International to Lifetime Brands in 2008.

I am not sure how I came to possess this particular bell. I am guessing it belonged to my Mom and I inherited it. Ruth or Harriet, do you know the backstory of this bell?

Learning something new every day as I share the stories of my bell collection with you.
