Cuba - ¿Dónde estás?
Cuba - ¿Dónde estás? - Day 90 - Daily Content Challenge
My bell today reminds me of the opportunity I had to go to Cuba with a group of friends from Lethbridge to meet and share in an event with new friends in Cuba.
The first year we went was in 2016. We were there to learn from others and to help the churches who are part of FIBAC hold their annual assembly meetings.
One of the things we did was to work alongside those hosting the meetings and prepare the welcome packages for the delegates. Once the delegates arrived from all across the country we were there to welcome them and to work behind the scenes helping bus the tables and making sure the dining room was ready for the next meal.
This bell is one I bought as a souvenir from one of the trips. I like this one because it shows a picture of the map of the island.
When the delegates arrived or had a break I attempted to communicate with them using my limited Spanish. I would say, Hola mi nombre es Lucy. Soy de Canadá.
They would respond and tell me their name and if I managed to say Where are you from? - ¿Dónde estás? - I quickly pulled out a map I had of Cuba and would get them to show me on the map where they were from.
Another thing I learned to do on subsequent trips was to have pen and paper handy and get the folks to write their name and where they were from in my notebook. We all had name tags but writing your name seemed to make it more personal.
Having the opportunity to return the next year, many of the delegates I met the year before would be excited to see me again and I could often show them my notebook from the previous year and let them know I hadn’t forgotten them.
Say hello to someone you meet today and find out their name! You will put a smile on their face! Hola, mi nombre es Lucy! ¿Y tú? or ¿Y usted?
