Lapland

A Bell from Lapland - Day 102 - Daily Content Challenge

Lapland stretches across Norway, Sweden, Finland and into the Kola Peninsula of Russia.

Lapland makes up about one third of Finland’s total area and it is a region, not a country.
Lapland is very sparsely-populated. About 184,000 people call the region home. It is the homeland of the indigenous Sami people. Laplanders speak the Sami language, also called Lapp.
There are 21 municipalities in Lapland. It is home to Sweden’s northernmost town, Kiruna.
Sweden’s highest mountain, Kebnekaise and Sweden’s deepest lake is Hornavan.
Rovaniemi is the capital of the Lapland region in northern Finland. It was almost totally destroyed during World War II. Today it is a modern city known for being the ‘official’ home of Santa Claus. It is also a great place to view the Northern Lights.
Staple foods are reindeer, fish and game meats. Lapland is also famous for its cheese. Leipäjuusto or bread cheese, also known in the US as Finnish squeaky cheese, is produced from rich cow’s milk. Lappi is another Finnish cheese developed in the Lapland region of Finland made from partially skimmed cow’s milk.
Bread cheese is served with cloudberry jam, another specialty of the region. Cloudberries are prevalent throughout Scandinavia where they are very highly prized. Generally they only grow in the wild and need to be foraged.
My bell shows the Sea-Blue Nordic cross which is also on the Flag of Finland.
Have you ever been to Lapland? Have you tasted bread cheese? Have you eaten cloudberry jam?

Welcome!

Enjoy my posts.
