Paros, a Greek Island

Paros, a Greek Island - Day 103 - Daily Content Challenge

Paros is the name written on the back of this bell.

My sister Ruth and I had the opportunity to enjoy a week-long holiday on the island of Paros.

Paros is a Greek island in the Aegean Sea. It is best known for its beaches and traditional villages. Today Paros is mainly known as a popular tourist spot.

There is a windmill on my bell. There are many traditional windmills all around the island. They have stood for 200 years. In the past these windmills were of vital importance for the locals. The wind is so strong in this area that the people used the power of the wind to grind their wheat.

Paros is affected by northernly Meltemi winds. The beaches on the east coast get the most wind because of a funnel in the strait between the beaches and the island of Naxos.  The Meltemi is the Aegean summer wind which usually begins late in the morning and can blow all through the day. Paros is windy all year long.

Most windmills were built in the 19th C. but when technology began to advance these windmills became irrelevant. Some have been renovated and are used as hotels, cafeterias or art galleries.

Our week on Paros was a delightful time and this bell was a perfect souvenir to remind me of a great holiday.
