Province House in Prince Edward Island
Province House in Prince Edward Island - Day 108 - Daily Content Challenge
A bell showing Province House in Prince Edward Island.
P.E.I. or Prince Edward Island is one of the ten provinces of Canada. Canada has ten provinces and three territories. Each province has its own provincial government with the responsibility to govern its own province.
Province House in Prince Edward Island is located in Charlottetown, the capital city of PEI. The Prince Edward Island Legislature, known as the Legislative Assembly, has met here since 1847.
One of the most important events that ever took place at Province House was the Charlottetown Conference in 1864. This was the first of many meetings that ultimately led to the Confederation of Canada in 1867. As a result, Charlottetown is known as the Birthplace of Confederation.
In recognition of its status as the longest serving legislative building in Canada and the role it played in the development of responsible government and freedom of the press, Province House was designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 1996.
Currently the building is closed for conservation work but visitors are invited next door to the Confederation Centre of the Arts. Here there is an exhibit of the Story of Confederation.
Have you been to Charlottetown, PEI? Have you seen this Historic Landmark?
