The Order of the Thistle, Scotland

The Order of the Thistle, Scotland - Day 109 - Daily Content Challenge

The prickly purple thistle has been Scotland’s national emblem for hundreds of years. Why is the thistle a Scottish symbol? Legend tells the story that an invading Norse army tried to ambush a party of Scots warriors while they were sleeping. The invaders were in bare feet and when one of them stepped on a thistle he cried out in pain. This warned the Scots and they were able to defend themselves. There is no written evidence of this event, but it makes a good story.

This plant which is found all over Scotland grows to a height of five feet. It is covered by vicious spines which protect it like a porcupine.

The thistle is an ancient Celtic symbol of nobility. It represents one of the highest honours of Scotland. The Most Ancient and Most Noble Order of the Thistle is an order of chivalry. This honor is bestowed to those who have made an outstanding contribution to the life of Scotland and to the United Kingdom. Her Majesty the Queen invests those in the Order of the Thistle.

My bell, showing the thistle, is a reminder of my trips to Scotland. Have you been to Scotland? What is your favourite place?
