Bears in Jasper National Park

Bears in Jasper National Park - Day 111 - Daily Content Challenge

Jasper National Park is located in Alberta, Canada. It is the largest national park in Alberta’s Rocky Mountains. The park’s glaciers, wildlife, lakes, waterfalls, canyons and evergreen forest surrounded by towering mountains are some of the reasons the park was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Jasper is famous for its abundant wildlife. The park is home to caribou, elk, moose, mountain goats, bighorn sheep, bears and wolves. There are many smaller creatures such as marmots and pikas as well as a variety of birds. Spring and fall are the best times to see wildlife.

Jasper National Park has both black bears and grizzly bears. There are about 109 grizzly bears and the female grizzly bears have offspring every four to five years.

Both types of bears are scavengers and omnivorous, eating both meat and vegetation. Berries and roots form the mainstay of their diet. The picture on my bell shows a bear catching a fish for his dinner.

Remember bears are wild so keep your distance. Here are some tips on the Jasper National Park website regarding safety while driving on the roads in the park.

     1. Watch out for animals near the road. Be prepared to avoid a collision at all times.

     2. If you see an animal by the road, slow down. Warn other motorists by flashing your hazard lights.

     3. If you stop to view roadside wildlife, pull safely out of traffic, stay in your vehicle and move on after a few minutes.

     4. If you see a bear, consider not stopping!

Have you been to Jasper National Park or any of the other National Parks in Alberta? Have you encountered a bear? I have. Thankfully we were able to climb into a car and stay put until the bear went away.
