Wise Old Owl
A Wise Old Owl - Day 124 -Daily Content Challenge
Yesterday I shared a story about the last bell I have in my collection. It is the tiniest bell I own and I showed the curio shelf I use to showcase my collection of miniature items.
I noticed that many of the items on this shelf are animals so I am going to start sharing about the animal mementos I have.
Sitting on the shelf directly below the bell is an owl. Owls are considered symbols of wisdom. We say he/she is like a wise old owl. One quote I like is this by Christie Watson. ‘An owl is the wisest of all birds because the more it sees the less it talks.’
Owls are considered wise not because of any superior intelligence but because they are so successful as hunters. Owls are extremely farsighted. Their eyes are on the front so they have amazing binocular vision. They can see about 110 degrees around them and they have increased depth perception compared to other birds. An owl can spot a tiny field mouse moving quietly in the distance and quickly grab its prey.
Great-horned owls make a hoo-hoo-hoooo sound to declare claim to a particular territory. They are warning other owls to stay away.
I remember my Mom saying this many times when we kept asking Who? ‘Hoo, Hoo, said the Owl.’ And then replying with the comment, ‘Good, Lord, any man will do!’ Mom always had a smile on her face or a twinkle in her eye when she would say this and rarely gave us a straight answer to our question.
Do you have a favourite quote about owls?
