Another Jade Elephant
Another Jade Elephant - Day 142 - Daily Content Challenge
Today’s elephant sits on my curio shelf. This one is made from a piece of jade that has been polished and shaped into an elephant. Earlier I shared a smaller jade elephant that was made into a tiny charm that I wear on a necklace. This one is about eight times larger and the jade is a lighter green colour.
Jade is a mineral used in some cultures as jewellery and for ornaments. It is mostly known for its green varieties even though it appears naturally in other colours as well. Nephrite and jadeite are two different silicate minerals that are both called jade.
Nephrite is composed of jade and actinolite. Actinolite contains varying amounts of iron and magnesium. Nephrite is slightly softer than jadeite. Nephrite is more resistant to breaking than jadeite because it has a denser structure. Nephrite is accepted as jade in the international gem and jewellery industry and ranges from translucent to opaque. It can be light to dark green, yellow, brown, black, grey, or white.
Green nephrite can be found in northwestern China, British Columbia in Canada and in Siberia, Russia. All three are major suppliers for the Chinese market.
I think I got this elephant at a gift shop in the Canadian Rockies so I am guessing it is a piece of Nephrite Jade found in British Columbia.
