Sandy Coloured Camels

Sandy Coloured Camels - Day 158 - Daily Content Challenge

Camels are sandy coloured with long legs, big lips and a snout, and a humped back.  The two types of camels are very similar except for one difference.

🐪 Dromedary camels have one hump while Bactrian camels have two. 🐫

Camels are native to desert environments.  They have adapted to the harsh, hot and dry desert environment in many ways.  They have three eyelids.  One of them is clear and it comes up over the eye to protect it from sand and sand storms.  They also have two rows of thick eyelashes which also protect their eyes from the sand.  They can shut their nostrils during sandstorms to keep sand from getting up their snouts.

Their thick fur protects them from the sun and their bodies have adapted to use water efficiently. The camel’s hump stores fat, not water.

A camel hump is 99% body fat which is metabolized when food is scarce.  Camels can actually survive up to six months without food or water.  When food and water are available, camels eat and drink large amounts to prepare for leaner times.

While living in Kuwait, I purchased this drawing of two camels and then had it framed.  It now hangs on my wall in my living room.  I love the details showing their pretty eyelids and their cute faces.  I wonder if they would win one of the beauty contests mentioned in my post yesterday. 🐪🐪🐪
