Respect

Kekich Credo Statements - Respect - Day 237 - Daily Content Challenge

Kekich Credo #49 - Have strict and total respect for other people’s property.

You show respect for your property by taking good care of it.  When other people let you use their property, be careful not to break it or lose it.  Treat it with respect and always remember to return it.

Respect for other people’s things implies we should not use what is not ours. If we need what does not belong to us, we cannot take it if we do not have the approval of its owner.  Respecting property can be as simple as learning to say please and thank you.  When you ask for an item, you should say please and when you are given an item you should say thank you.

You should also respect public property and other people’s property. You run the risk of getting into trouble if you do not respect the things that belong to others.  You can avoid trouble because you will not have broken, vandalized, or lost something that belongs to someone else. Also when you respect other people’s property, they are more likely to respect yours.

The concept of showing respect goes beyond the simple speaking of words.  It is to know how to appreciate and recognize the work of others.  To take care of the things that other people have made and we get to use for ourselves.  The flowers and the trees in your city parks, the people who keep your city clean, and the bus drivers and the buses and trains you use to get around all should be treated with respect.

We need to show respect to the Land that we are on.  We can do this by taking the time to acknowledge the land we are on.  I live in Lethbridge, Alberta Canada and when I start my online Math classes or tutoring sessions I like to make a Land Acknowledgement.  I have a picture of the Blackfoot OKI sign that means Hello or Welcome and I make this Land Acknowledgement -

We are on the traditional territory of the Blackfoot People.  We honour, support and respect their cultural ways and language. Lethbridge is also home to the Metis of Alberta, Region III

Respect for others is important too.  Respecting others means that you accept someone for who they are, even when they are different from you or when you don’t agree with them.  One of the best ways to show respect is to listen to them.  We must allow a person to express their point of view even if we disagree with them.  Respect builds feelings of trust, safety and wellbeing. Have strict and total respect for other people’s property.
