Kekich Credo #77 - Always work on increasing the size of the pie, rather than just your portion.
Increase the size of the pie, rather than just your portion.
To increase the size of the pie can also be the expression to grow the pie. Growing the pie means to create new markets and opportunities for the whole or for everyone.
Your portion could also be called your slice of the pie. A pie is divided into various sizes and some players have larger ‘slices’ of the pie than others. The slices of the pie refers to how individuals share in the profits or benefits of something.
For example, if the size of the pie is worth $1000 and your slice is 5% then your portion is $50. If you work on increasing the pie to $2000 then your portion would be $100. On the other hand if the pie remains the same size then you would have to double your portion to get $100. If you now get 10% of the pie, someone else has to lose. If you work on increasing the size of the pie you are working for the common good and everyone gains.
One way of displaying data is to use a pie chart. Pie charts show the relationship of parts to the whole. If you think of concentric circles, as each circle grows or increases in size, the larger each slice or each portion of the pie becomes.
In the diagram below the smaller circle on the right is divided into four slices and shows the size of each portion. When the pie was increased to the larger circle, each individual slice increased as well. Each of the four portions are larger too.
This credo statement is another way of saying everyone wins when you focus on working for the whole rather than just on your own interests.
