Life’s Purpose - Appreciating Art

“I will appreciate the beauty of art. I will find ways to include it in my life, by being both a spectator and finding ways to explore my own artistic talents.”

Art is an expression of our thoughts, emotions, intuitions, and desires.  It is about sharing the way we experience the world.  It is a way to communicate ideas and concepts that cannot be portrayed by words alone.

There are many forms of art.  Decorative, commercial and fine art are three types of visual arts.  A broader definition of ‘the arts’ covers everything from painting through theatre, music, architecture and more.

Visual art is a visual object or experience consciously created through a skill or imagination.  The term art includes diverse media such as painting, sculpture, printmaking, decorative arts, drawing, and photography.

Art can have different meanings to different people.  The message can be interpreted in many ways by its audience.  Quite often the message is different to what the artist intended. The meaning of a piece of art can often depend on many factors.  History, emotion, culture and personal experiences of the artist all play a role in the meaning behind artwork.

Art appreciation allows people to make connections to the context of art and the interactions of societies. It is difficult to understand art without understanding the culture.

Art can stimulate thought and reason.  Art can trigger ideas as it allows viewers to pull their own emotions in their thoughts and draw from their personal experiences when they encounter them.  One can feel glory, pain, loss, and joy through the appreciation of art.

Scientific studies have proven that art appreciation improves our quality of life.  Art makes us feel good.  It gives us meaning and helps us understand our world.  When we create art, we elevate our mood, we improve our ability to problem solve, and open our minds to new ideas.

Yesterday, I mentioned that I enjoy directing and playing handbells.  Ringing handbells has a visual element to it as well as playing a musical composition. When we perform a piece for an audience we are conscious of the impact of the visual art of ringing handbells.  Are the circles we make with the bells all at the same height? Does the way we lift or lower the bells, make circles, shake, tower swing, mallet, mart and pluck make us look like we are a team creating a musical experience for the audience to enjoy?  Are the ringers watching the conductor?  Do we have a smile on our faces?  Does it look like we are enjoying ourselves? All these things show the art of ringing handbells.

Have a great day and go use your talents to create and appreciate the beauty of the world around you.
