Life’s Purpose #13 - Achieving a Meaningful Career

“I will continuously pour into myself the tools needed to be the best at what I do. I want to have a career that improves the life of others and society in some way.”

Two phrases jumped out at me in this statement.  The first is ‘to be the best at what I do’ and the second is ‘to have a career that improves the life of others’.

How do you know what career is best for you?  Take an inventory of your skill sets and abilities.  Identify the skills you have and consider how you might use these skills in different fields.  Take career assessments.  Make a list of your options.  Consult with others about potential career fields.  Gain valuable experience. Build a network and ask a mentor.

When I googled a list of careers that involve helping people, the one that was at the top of all the lists I found was teacher.  This made me smile because I am a retired teacher.  That was my career for 39 years.  Where would we be without teachers?

Society’s most important jobs include the Police Force, Nurses, Teachers, Firefighters, and Paramedics.  The Police Force are the people we turn to when we are in danger, when we need protection, and when we don’t feel safe.  Nurses are the backbone of hospitals and are truly invaluable members of society.  Firefighters save lives and property, while putting out fires and managing other emergencies.  Primary care paramedics are responsible for transporting ill or injured patients from scenes of emergency and/or between facilities. Primary care paramedics also assist with ensuring that ambulances or other emergency medical services (EMS) vehicles are properly stocked and equipped.

Here are steps to finding a career that makes you happy.  Find your reason to get out of bed each day.  Visualize the future you want.  Know what your values and your strengths are.  Identify your blockers and smash them.  Set your goals and move forward.

Your life purpose consists of the central motivating aims of your life.  For some people, purpose is connected to your vocation.  Your career can be guided by your purpose.  Purpose can guide life decisions, shape goals, offer a sense of direction, create meaning and influence behaviour.
