Life’s Purpose #14 - Cultivating Healthy, Reciprocal Relationships
“I will treat others as I want to be treated. I will make sure I give as much as I receive. I will communicate with others to understand and give them what they need, instead of going off of my assumptions of their needs, so that I am truly treating them in a manner that makes them feel important and respected.”
Treat others as I want to be treated. This is known as the golden rule, a moral principle which says that you should treat others the way you want to be treated yourself. Treating others with kindness and respect builds feelings of trust, safety and wellbeing and acts of kindness have the potential to make the world a happier place.
I will make sure I give as much as I receive. It is easier to give than to receive, but not necessarily better. When you allow others to help you, it is a sign of strength, not weakness. You are reminded that you are not in charge and it keeps you humble.
It is better to give than to receive. Spending money on others or giving to charity puts a bigger smile on your face than buying things for yourself. If you want joy, give joy to others. If you want love, learn to give love. If you want attention and appreciation, learn to give attention and appreciation. If you want wealth, help others prosper.
I will communicate with others to understand and give them what they need, instead of going off of my assumptions of their needs. Often we think we know what someone else needs instead of taking the time to find out from them what they need. This requires good communication skills. We need to listen and show that you are listening to them by saying things like ‘I hear you’ or ‘Just to make sure, I heard you say XYZ’. Everyone just wants their ideas to be heard and validated.
Listening shows respect and regard for others. It helps to build rapport and demonstrates that you care about others and what they have to say. Listening is reciprocal. When you are a good listener, others will tend to listen more carefully to you too.
