Be Full of Life and Make Positive Ripples

Be Full of Life and Make Positive Ripples - Day 360 - Daily Content Challenge

By definition a lake is a large body of water surrounded by land.  Lakes are highly valued for their recreational, aesthetic, scenic, and water-supply qualities.  The water in lakes is one of the most treasured of our natural resources.

Lakes are important habitats and food resources for a diverse array of fish, aquatic life, and wildlife.  A lake helps to regulate the flow of a river. During heavy rainfall, it prevents flooding.  During the dry season, it helps maintain an even flow of water.  Proper lake function can ease the impact of floods and droughts by storing large amounts of water and releasing it during shortages.

Lakes also work to preserve the biodiversity and habitat of the area. People, plants, microbes and animals depend on healthy lakes. They play a special role as stopovers for migratory birds. Some lakes provide fresh water for drinking and they supply water for irrigation in agricultural fields.

I grew up in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia located on the eastern shore of Halifax Harbour. Dartmouth is called the City of Lakes.  There are 25 separate lakes located in Dartmouth ranging in area from 1 to 140 ha. I learned to swim at Banook Lake.

Today I live in Lethbridge, Alberta across the street from Henderson Lake.  I rode my bicycle around the lake today enjoying a beautiful fall day.  Henderson Lake is a 24 ha man made lake.  The lake is perfect for kayaks, canoes and paddle boats.  The docks are often used by fishermen looking to catch pike, walleye, perch or whitefish. One can see many migratory birds resting on the lake.
