Sharpen Your Senses - Day 371 - Daily Content Challenge
A desert is a place where almost no rain falls. Some have rocky hills and mountains while others have huge areas of sand or flat stony ground. Most deserts are arid and have sparse vegetation.
There are four types of deserts. Subtropical deserts are hot and dry all year round. Coastal deserts have cool winters and warm summers. Cold winter deserts have long dry summers and low rainfall in the winter. Polar deserts are cold all year long.
There are twenty-three deserts in the world. The largest desert is located in the southern hemisphere in the continent of Antarctica. The Antarctic Desert expands across 5.5 million square miles. The world’s smallest desert is in Canada. Carcross Desert is only 600 m wide. The Lut Desert in Iran is the hottest spot on Earth and the largest continuous sand desert on Earth is the Empty Quarter in the south-central part of the Arabian Peninsula.
In deserts, you usually see a lot of open soil and rocks and not much grass or other kinds of plants. Animals that live in deserts include geckos, lizards, toads, jackrabbits, camels, snakes, spiders and meerkats.
When travelling through the desert, one hopes to find an oasis. An oasis is an area made fertile by a source of freshwater. Oases are irrigated by natural springs or other underground water sources.Â
