Follow Rainbows and Live a Magical Life! - Day 391 - Daily Content Challenge
The Unicorn is a mythical animal. It is usually a white animal depicted with the body and head of a horse with a long flowing mane and tail. There is a single straight horn projecting from the middle of its forehead.Â
The unicorn appeared in early Mesopotamian artworks, and it is also referred to in the ancient myths of India and China. The Ancient Greeks were the first to write about unicorns. The unicorn is first mentioned in a long lost book about India about 400 BC. The animal, the historian Ctesias was actually describing, was probably the Indian rhinoceros.Â
Scotland has the highest unicorn population in the World. In Celtic mythology the unicorn was a symbol of purity and innocence, masculinity, power and freedom. Stories of dominance and chivalry associated with the unicorn may be why it was chosen as Scotland’s national animal.
Legend also says that their horns can purify poisoned water and thus have healing power. James II wholeheartedly embraced the legend and the unicorn became the symbol of purity and power that Scottish kings and nobility identified with in the 15th C. This entirely fictional animal is officially recognized as Scotland’s national animal.
Two unicorns are featured on the coat of arms of Scotland. According to folklore, the unicorn and the lion hate each other. The unicorn was believed to be the natural enemy of the lion. The lion represents the English royals. Ever since 1603, the royal coat of arms has the unicorn of Scotland on one side and the lion of England on the other.Â
Some believe that a unicorn’s horn and blood can heal diseases like measles and fever. All you need to do is touch the unicorn’s horn and you’ll feel his healing power. Some believe that the magical hug of a unicorn is healing too. Â
