Carve Out a Place for Yourself and Stand the Test of Time

Carve Out a Place for Yourself and Stand the Test of Time - Day 410 - Daily Content Challenge

A Canyon is a deep, narrow valley with very steep sides. The word canyon comes from the Spanish word cañon which means pipe or tube.  Another word often used to mean canyon is gorge, but a gorge is almost always steeper and narrower than a canyon.

Canyons are created by erosion.  The water in a  river flowing over thousands or millions of years erodes the soil and rocks to form a valley.  The largest canyons have been cut through dry areas by swift streams that have fed by rain or melting snow from wetter areas.

There are three common types of canyons.  A Box Canyon is shorter, narrower and has three sides.  Slot Canyons are narrow with smooth walls.  Submarine Canyons are the steep valleys on continental slopes under the sea.

Zhemchug Canyon is an underwater canyon located in the middle of the Bering Sea. The largest and deepest canyon in the world is the Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon located in Tibet. It lies where the Himalayas, the Hengduan Range and the Nyainqentanglha Range all come together. This Tibetan canyon reaches an average depth of 7,440 feet passing through the Gyala Peri mountains and the peaks of the Namcha Barwa.  It is also one of the world’s longest canyons.  It stretches more than 500 km.

The Grand Canyon in the U.S. touches four states: Arizona, Nevada, Utah, and Colorado. You can see the South Rim of the Grand Canyon in Arizona and the West Rim in Nevada.  The Grand Canyon was carved over some 6 million years ago.  The deepest part is about 6,000 feet deep.  There are many hidden caves in the canyon.  The Grand Canyon is one of the most visited national parks in the United States.  I’ve been to the West Rim in Nevada.  Have you?

These are the sayings on the bookmark called Advice from a Canyon.

  • Carve out a place for yourself

  • Aspire to new Plateaux

  • Stand the test of time

  • Don’t get Boxed in

  • Listen to the Voice of the Wind

  • It’s OK to be a Little Off the Wall

  • Reach Deep!

Here are my comments about each of these sayings.

  • Carve out a place for yourself - Instead of letting others choose what they want from you, carve out a path for yourself that you have chosen. When you follow someone else’s footsteps you are just checking off items on their wish list.

  • Aspire to new Plateaux - Reach higher and higher.  Reach a level, and then reach for the next level.  Once you achieve that level, work to reach the next and so on.

  • Stand the test of time - Continue to be respected for hanging in there for a long time.

  • Don’t get Boxed in - Getting boxed in means you get put in a situation where you have very little choice about what you can do.

  • Listen to the Voice of the Wind - The Holy Spirit is described as wind.  Listening to what the Spirit of God is saying is what I try to do.

  • It’s OK to be a Little Off the Wall - Being off the wall means strange, wacky or unusual.  That’s OK - Be unique.  Be yourself.

  • Reach Deep! - Reach out.  Extend your hand and reach down to help someone else.

Have a great day.  Carve Out a Place for Yourself and Stand the Test of Time.
