Mount Lougheed - Alberta, Canada
View of Mount Lougheed at BGMR - Day 65 - Daily Content Challenge
Yesterday I shared a picture of the three chairs and this is the view you would have if you sat down and enjoyed the scenery around you. I took today’s picture when I came from the lodge on my way back to my chalet here at Banff Gate Mountain Resort.
I believe the mountain you see in my photo is named Mount Lougheed.
Mount Lougheed is a triple-peak mountain located in the Canadian Rockies of Alberta, Canada. The highest summit known as Peak 2 is 3,107 meters tall. That is over 10,000 feet!
Mount Lougheed was named after Sir James Lougheed (1854-1925). He was a prominent lawyer, politician, senator, and cabinet minister who served in several federal parliaments in the late 1800s and the early 1900s.
Sir Lougheed received his knighthood in 1916 for his service as Chairman of the Military Hospitals Commission during WWI. He is the only Albertan to be knighted.
The mountain was originally named Wind Mountain, but was renamed in 1928 to honor Lougheed after his passing.
The Sir James Lougheed Award of Distinction recognizes academic excellence. Each year up to fifteen Alberta students in graduate programs may be eligible for these awards which provide the opportunity for study outside of Alberta at institutions anywhere in the world.
Take a moment today to stop and enjoy the beauty around you.
