What is an Extreme Cold Warning? An Extreme Cold Warning is issued when the temperature or wind chill is expected to levels ranging from minus 30°C to minus 55°C for at least two hours. Well they got that right - it was -33°C at 1:25 am this morning and when I checked again at 6:30 am the temperature had risen to -32°C. Oh, right now at 8:10 am it is showing -30°C.

How much is -33°C on the fahrenheit scale? Here is the formula. (-33°C × 9/5) + 32 = -27.4°F

So whether you are in Canada or the US, it is cold here in Lethbridge and all of Alberta!

Here is what Environment Canada posted.

Extremely cold windchill values between -40 and -45 continue this morning for most of Alberta. Most areas of the province will experience extreme cold conditions for much of this week.

What are the risks? Risks are greater for young children, older adults, people with chronic illnesses, people working or exercising outdoors, and those without proper shelter. I am thankful for my furnace but I still need to wear a sweater in my house as I sit and work on my computer.

It is recommended that one does the following:

Cover up. Frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with wind chill. Guess wearing a mask has more than one benefit!

If you are driving, keep emergency supplies in your vehicle such as extra blankets and jumper cables. I hope my car will start. I have it plugged in.

The final recommendation says this. If it is too cold for you to stay outside, it’s too cold for your pet to stay outside.
