Find Your Oasis and Weather Life’s Storms

Find Your Oasis and Weather Life’s Storms - Day 375 - Daily Content Challenge

Palm trees are a type of evergreen plant.  There are over 2,600 species of palm trees that belong to the Arecaceae family of perennial flowering plants.  These plants can grow as climbers, shrubs, tree-like and stemless plants.  Those having a tree-like form are called palm trees. Two types of palm trees that I am most familiar with are coconut palms and date palms.

Palms are recognized by their fibre-covered trunks or stems and their fan-shaped or feather-like fronds (leaves). Most types of palms such as coconut palms and date palms grow in warm countries.  There are some species of palms that are tolerant of temperate climates and cold temperatures.  Some varieties of palm trees can even grow indoors as houseplants.

Coconut palms are cultivated in tropical areas for its edible fruit, the coconut.  The coconut palm cannot grow in cold weather.  Temperatures of 40 degrees F will damage a coconut palm and freezing temperatures will kill it.  As a result South Florida is the only part of the state where you can grow coconuts. Coconut palms have a light greyish-brown trunk.  This large single-trunked palm can grow to a height of 80-100 feet.  The trunk, shaped like a column, is slender and often swollen at the base.

The date palm is one I saw everyday while living and teaching in Kuwait.  The date palm has been prized from antiquity and may have originated in what is now Iraq.  The fruit has been the staple food and chief source of wealth in the irrigable deserts of North Africa and the Middle East.  In Kuwait the palm trees produce dates that are considered lush and tasty.

Here are the sayings that I found on the bookmark called Advice from a Palm Tree.

  • Reach High

  • Stand Your Ground

  • Soak Up Some Sun

  • Be Flexible

  • Find Your Oasis

  • Weather Life’s Storms

  • Spend Time at the Beach!

These are my comments about each of these sayings.

  • Reach High - Be ambitious and inspiring.

  • Stand Your Ground - Stay true to your values.

  • Soak Up Some Sun - Enjoy the outdoors.  Spend time outside and relax.

  • Be Flexible - Be able to tweek or change plans in response to altered circumstances.

  • Find Your Oasis - In the desert palm trees usually grow near an oasis.  To find your oasis means to find a place where you can find safety and sustenance.  A peaceful area in our daily lives.

  • Weather Life’s Storms - There will be challenges but learn to deal with a difficult situation and look for the silver lining.

  • Spend Time at the Beach! - Palm trees are synonymous with tropical beaches and warm sunny climates.  Enjoy time at the beach!

Have a great day everyone.  Find Your Oasis and Weather Life’s Storms.
