Have a Purr-fect Day - Day 428 - Daily Content Challenge
The cat is a domestic species of small carnivorous mammals. It is commonly referred to as the domestic cat or house cat to distinguish it from the wild members of the family Felidae. One of the largest domestic cat breeds is a Maine Coon which reaches a height between 25 to 41 cm tall. This friendly fluffy monster is believed to have evolved in North America from European cats that hitched a ride with some of the early explorers. Â
Cats are among the smartest creatures in the animal kingdom. Abyssinian cats are known as the smartest cat breed. They are inquisitive by nature and have exceptional detective skills. They enjoy toys like puzzles.Â
Wild cats need to sleep to conserve their energy to hunt. Domestic cats sleep for long periods throughout the day too. They will sleep for around 13 to 16 hours a day. Their instinct to sleep and prepare for the hunt carries on. Â
An average healthy adult cat can jump up to six times their height. Some can reach the height of 8 feet. Most cats have 18 toes. There are five toes on each of their front feet and four on the back. A year of a cat’s life equals 15 years of a human’s life. Cats live on average between 12-18 years.Â
Avoid feeding your cat table scraps. Onions and garlic, raw eggs and meat, chocolate, alcohol, grapes and raisins are some of the most toxic foods for cats. Bananas are not toxic to pets. It is one of the fruits that cats can eat safely in small portions. Â
Cats can see very well in low light. Cats’ have large corneas and pupils which allow more light into their eyes. This extra light helps cats to see in the dark. Some scientists believe cats can only see blue and grey colours. They may also see yellow as well. Cats are also good at visual recognition except when it comes to human faces. Cats use other cues such as your scent or the sound of your to identify you.Â
Cats can recognize and respond to their owners’ voices and they also recognize their own names. They lack the cognitive skills to understand human language but they know when you talk to them.Â
Cats can bite and inflict severe lacerations. These are painful and can easily become infected.  They can also cause cat scratch fever which is usually benign but it can become a serious infectious disease with flu-like symptoms. Â
Cats suffer from separation anxiety. They are apprehensive when you leave the house and they want reassurance that you will return at the pre-arranged hour. Some cats don’t show signs of anxiety however. Often when you return from a holiday your cat acts indifferent to your return. Some cats even behave like they are offended and they pretend not to notice you at all.Â
Some cats will choose to ignore something they perceive as a threat. If you swatted your cat in the past or even yelled at them, they may now see you as a potential threat. They try to ignore you, since they don’t know if your intentions are good or bad.Â
Cats are curious by nature and they want to know what’s going on. Sometimes they will sit and stare at you. They are just observing you to see if you are doing anything interesting. Cats are visual hunters and when they go outdoors they are on high alert. They are always keeping their eyes peeled for anything moving. Â
