Keep an Eye Out for Opportunities and Take Others Under Your Wing
Keep an Eye Out for Opportunities and Take Others Under Your Wing - Day 397 - Daily Content Challenge
The Osprey is a bird of prey which is also called a sea hawk, a river hawk and a fish hawk. Ospreys are very large hawks. Their bodies are slender with long, narrow wings and long legs. They fly with a marked kink in their wings. From below It looks like they make an M-shape with their wings and bodies.
Ospreys are found near water where large numbers of fish are present. Most commonly around major coastal estuaries and salt marshes, but they can also be found around large lakes, reservoirs, and rivers. You will almost always find Ospreys living, breeding, and raising their young around water.
The Osprey is mostly solitary, only pairing up for the breeding season. Males and females have different vocal ranges. When they call to each other it sounds a bit like a duet. Hence the name for a group of Ospreys is a Duet.
Ospreys build their nests in tall, isolated trees that are close to shallow bodies of water. Ospreys seem to prefer to sleep or roost in nearby trees. When the female is close to laying the first egg, she will sometimes spend the night in the nest. Ospreys are most active during the day especially early in the morning and in the evening. Males do the majority of the fishing where there are chicks to feed in midsummer.
Most Ospreys that breed in North America migrate to Central and South America for the winter. A few Ospreys overwinter in parts of Florida and California. Ospreys tend to return to the same nest each year. When they arrive both the male and female spend time updating the nest with new materials. Â
