Live Life to the Fullest - Day 364 - Daily Content Challenge
The Moon is the brightest and largest object in our night sky. It is the Earth’s only natural satellite. It is about one-quarter the size of the Earth in diameter and it is the fifth largest moon in the solar system.Â
The Moon was likely formed after a Mars-sized body collided with Earth. The surface of the Moon is cratered and pitted from impacts of comets and asteroids. Â
The Moon orbits the Earth at an average distance of about 385,00 km (240,000 miles.) Its presence helps stabilize the Earth’s wobble on its axis, making our home planet a more livable place by moderating our climate. The Moon is also the main driver of the Earth’s tides.
The Moon has a very thin atmosphere called an exosphere which is not breathable. The lack of liquid water on the Moon and its weak atmosphere makes it impossible to support life as we know it. That is why one needs to wear a spacesuit when walking on the Moon.
When the earth comes between the Sun and the Moon, we have a lunar eclipse. A total lunar eclipse happens when the Moon and the Sun are on opposite sides of the Earth. A partial lunar eclipse occurs when only part of the Earth’s shadow covers the Moon.
