Sparkle and Celebrate Your Uniqueness
Sparkle and Celebrate Your Uniqueness - Day 395 - Daily Content Challenge
A snowflake begins to form when an extremely cold water droplet freezes onto a dust particle in the sky. This creates an ice crystal and as the ice crystal falls to the ground, water vapour freezes onto the primary crystal. This builds new crystals which are the six arms of the snowflake.Â
No two snowflakes are exactly alike. Each snowflake has six sides or points which are formed as the snowflake follows the will of the wind through the clouds. The molecules in ice crystals join to one another in a hexagonal shape. Since no two snowflakes follow the exact same path, no two are exactly alike when they reach the ground.Â
Snow appears white as it falls from the clouds or accumulates on the ground. Snow is actually translucent because it is composed of tiny ice crystals, which are also translucent. When light hits a snowflake, it is bent when it passes through the translucent crystals. The light is scattered across the visible light spectrum by the facets and imperfections in each crystal. The scattering of light results in white light even though each individual crystal appears clear.Â
Why am I talking about snowflakes today? Well, I am in the Rocky Mountains and this is the view out my window today. We had fresh snowfall yesterday.Â
