Stand Out and Bring Joy to Others
Stand Out and Bring Joy to Others - Day 403 - Daily Content Challenge
The bird that one labels peacock is actually a male peafowl. Females are called peahens and together they produce peachicks or baby peafowl. Peacocks are very noisy during the breeding season. They call with repeated penetrating screams. The male peafowl makes a unique call just before he mates with a peahen.Â
It takes about three years for peafowl to develop their tail. The tail feathers spread out in a distinctive train and have colourful eye markings of blue, gold, red and other hues. Once it is fully fashioned, the peacock is officially on the prowl. He is ready to dance, preen, and shake to attract the peahen. The large train is used in mating rituals. A peacock spreads his feathers and displays them for the peahens. Peacocks shed their train feathers after mating season is over.
Often strutting about in open ground, peacocks are majestic birds to look at, especially as they fan out their long tails. But if you have a peafowl as a pet, beware they will fly away if they are untrained or left out of the pen at night. Peafowl can fly but they only travel a very short distance.Â
Peacocks live in dense, forested areas. They roost in trees and gather together in flocks called parties. The two most recognizable peacocks are the blue peacock from Sri Lanka and the green peacock that lives in Myanmar and on the island of Java in Indonesia. The Indian peafowl is a peafowl species native to India. In 1963, the Indian peacock was declared the national bird of India. The Congo peafowl is the national bird of the Democratic Republic of Congo.Â
Peafowl are non-fussy omnivores. They require a high-protein diet to keep their feathers healthy. They will eat most plant foods such as seeds, grains, berries, vegetable and fruits as well as insects, arthropods, small lizards, frogs, and rodents. A peacock or peahen will not let snakes live within their territory and if they find one they will actively fight with it even if it is a poisonous snake. They will even eat snakes.Â
Peafowl can live between 10 - 25 years in the wild and up to 50 years in captivity. Â
